![Sports Chosun: [Star Interview] AOA Band or Dance… ‘Angels’ Seduction’
The music industry is excited at the arrival of the ‘angels’. Rookie group AOA, who have debuted for 4 weeks now, have said their name came from the meaning of being the best angels, which resulted in the name Ace of Angels. Coming from FNC Entertainment, home to FTISLAND, CNBLUE, and Juniel, they have become the topic of conversation by being the first 8-member girl group from FNC.
Among the flood of dance idols, these girls have differentiated themselves as expected from the maknaes (youngest) of their accomplished company. Combining both band and dance, their nickname was chosen as the ‘transformer’ group. It’s been confirmed that within the one team there will be two interchangeable units that will promote at the same time.
“There is a 5-member band composed of members playing instruments that is called AOA Black. The 3-member AOA White are planning on promoting solely focused on dancing. In Black, there is a ‘+1’ image where drummer Youkyoung will be with us. In the future, the two team’s members could mix and a different unit could appear.” (Jimin)
The members have performed both the band version and dance version of their title song ‘Elvis’ on their debut stages perfectly with un-rookie-like skills. Focusing on brass and stringed instruments, the recent dance song has also attempted something different. On top of that, the members’ beauty is unlike any other dance girl group.
“We worried about whether we would be successful having different versions for the same song while we were preparing. We practiced a lot more than any other team to the point where we would only sleep 2 hours a day. With this condition, the thought that we were the first to do this was what allowed us to endure through all this.” (Choa)
The members’ resume is also quite fancy. Winning 1st place at a 2010 school uniform contest, Seolhyun received a casting call and became the team’s face. She also featured in FTISLAND’s ‘Severely’ music video and gained a lot of attention. Featured in SBS drama ‘A Gentleman’s Dignity’ as an extra, Hyejeong instantly received a lot of attention. As expected with her 170cm lean figure, she is originally from the 2010 supermodel competition. In 2009, she also won the best award for the nation’s high school cheerleading competition. Mina was an internet ‘ulzzang’ (best face) and youngest Chanmi was famous for being good at dancing at Gumi.
In the Sponge Band, the team’s core is composed of Yookyung on drums while Jimin and Yuna are on guitar and keyboard respectively while also self-composing their own songs. On top of that, Choa, who built her dream as a singer while gaining musical experience with Juniel, strengthens the team with her vocals and guitar.
These girls have built their teamwork well while preparing from 2 years ago. They have grown to the point where they were surprised at their selves when the 8 members were chosen for the team through survival out of the 14 candidates. The public have asked whether they’re just a ‘for show’ band, and these rumors have been cleared through Jimin who self-composed 20 songs along with the other members who each hold musical talent.
About their basic stage experience, they are able to do everything other girl groups show on stage. With that, the nickname ‘transformer group’ was made to show that they could also be the ‘complete general type’ of girl group. FTISLAND, CNBLUE, and Juniel are their company sunbaes and are a good role model for the girls.“
